What is a 5 Number Summary?
The 5 number summary is a descriptive statistical measure that provides a quick snapshot of a dataset’s distribution. It consists of five key values:
- Minimum: The smallest value in the dataset
- First Quartile (Q1): The value below which 25% of the observations fall
- Median (Q2): The middle value that separates the higher half from the lower half of the dataset
- Third Quartile (Q3): The value below which 75% of the observations fall
- Maximum: The largest value in the dataset
Additionally, the Interquartile Range (IQR), which is the difference between Q3 and Q1, is often included as it measures statistical dispersion and helps identify outliers.
